Authority. As the Board of Directors of the civil corporation known as Zion Baptist Church, Incorporated, the Board of Trustees shall, in trust, have authority over all Church property, contracts, employees, and utilization of Church financial resources, including, but not limited to, preparation and presentation of an annual Church budget and administration of the same, subject to oversight by the Congregation and the Board of Church Administration. The prepared budget shall be presented to the Board of Church Administration (BCA) for approval prior to presentation to the Active Members of Zion Baptist Church.

History. The Board of Trustees has been an integral part of Zion Baptist Church from its early beginnings in the 1860s. Historically, the Board has acted as the Church’s agent in financial transactions, continued as custodian of all Church property, and later served as manager of the Church’s human resources and information resources. Keeping Zion Baptist Church in sound financial health, maintaining the property, equipping it with adequate staff to carry out its administrative functions and overseeing its information resources continue to be the Board of Trustee’s role and responsibilities.

Through the years, the Board of Trustees has been blessed with the leadership of O.W. McDonald, George W. Peterson, James Randolph, John Thompson, Ralph Jones, George B. Thomas, Sr., Wesley Williams, Sr., James M. Christian, Sr., Madeline C. McCullough, Brenda I. Johnson, Delores D. Willis, Sharlyn Grigsby-Queen, Beverly Lewis-Koch and our current Chair, David J. Saunders.

The first woman trustee, Florence Matthews, was appointed to the Board of Trustees in the 1950’s. The first woman to chair the Board of Trustees was Madeline C. McCullough who was elected in 2002.

Consistent with the mission of Zion Baptist Church, and II Corinthians Chapter 9 Verses 12-13 as our guide, the ministry of the Board of Trustees shall be to lovingly, prayerfully and faithfully serve the Church through judicious management of all of its resources. Trustees shall study the Word, love the Church and willingly work with others to enable the fulfillment of the mission and ministries of Zion. Through its open and flexible administration of the Church’s resources, the Board of Trustees shall facilitate the movement of Zion Baptist Church from mission to ministries (continually).
